Bangabandhu’s dream of “Sonar Bangla”

To the whole Bengali nation 17th March, 1920 is a blessed day as the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born on that day. The significance of the day lies in the fact that without the birth of Bangabandhu, his rise in politics, his relentless struggle for the people’s cause, even the independence of Bangladesh would not have emerged.

The people of Bangladesh had dreamt of a free land for long. Many individuals had sought to materialize that dream. But none could give the complete shape to that dream. It was Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who had completed that task like an architect. Under his charismatic leadership that dream was finally achieved on 16th December, 1971.

On 10th January 1972, Bangabandhu returned to Bangladesh. He took oath on 12th January, 1972. Then he started rebuilding the nation. He started his expedition by reorganizing all the institutions including the Central Bank, Public Service Commission, the Judiciary and the Parliament. Then he developed a framework mentioning the philosophy of our country. He constituted a committee to develop the constitution.

He used to dream for “Sonar Bangla” which will be free from hunger, poverty, corruption, illiteracy, communalism and ignorance. He realized that the existence of hunger, poverty and corruption will destroy the value of our independence. He knew that, true freedom would not come as long as our country people could not eat with their full stomach.

Once there was a famine in our country when many people died due to starvation. In the National Assembly he gave a speech, where he told, “We have to put a smile on poor people’s face. Bangal’s people have to survive with a minimum food. I have asked many leaders around the world. They came and helped me. With the help of friendly countries, we started our war against hunger. Many people told me that, about fifty lakh Bangali people will die due to hunger. Don’t know how much I did. But I only know that, there were no flaws in my attempt.”

He used to dream to reach the poor farmers with credit facility by the state. He was the dreamer of secularism. He used to dream- people of every religion will live here with peace and harmony. He never stopped dreaming for his people even until his last breath. He was leading Bangladesh to be a prosperous country. Actually, Bangladesh would be a prosperous country if he was not killed on 15th August 1975.

After that, people of Bangladesh experienced a dark chapter. But fortunately that dark chapter has gone from the Bangalees life when the able daughter of Bangabandhu, Prime Minister “Sheikh Hasina” came to the power in 1996. There is a famous quote in English that, “When God closes a door, somehow he opens a window”.

It’s none but our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the able successor of Bangabandhu who emerged as a window of hope. Bangabandhu founded Bangladesh, while his able daughter is working relentlessly to save it. She is completing the incomplete works of Bangabandhu. Under her dynamic leadership Bangladesh is moving ahead gradually.

Bangladesh is now mentioned as a ”Role Model” for its development in various sectors including education, health, agriculture, information, technology, empowerment of women etc. Today the whole world is amazed seeing the miraculous advancement of Bangladesh. World Bank, IMF, ADB, IDB, JICA and other world famous economists have expressed their astonishment seeing the miraculous development.

The RMG sector is holding the second position in the global economy. We are now self sufficient in food and fish production. There is no shortage of food in our country and no person die due to hunger. Even we have achieved the capacity to export the surplus production to foreign countries. “Monga” is totally vanished. Our foreign currency reserve is $32,381.5 million. The number of Mobile Phone users has crossed 10 million.

Fertility rate has been reduced from 6% to 2.2%. The school participation rate is quite equal in the primary level. Gender discrimination in the secondary school has been disappeared. Every Year near about 40 million of school students get new books at the first day of the year. 26,000 primary schools have been nationalized.  The per capital income is $1,909. The current GDP is 8.15%. The current poverty rate came down to 20.5%. The current inflation rate is within 5%.

Foreign investors are showing interest to invest here. We are constructing the Padma Bridge with our own finance. Besides this, some massive projects are being constructed here; Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, Metro Rail Project, Karnafully Tunnel etc. Bangladesh is committed to be transformed into a “Middle Income” country by 2021 and a “Developed Country” by 2041.

We have already achieved the MDG successfully. Now Bangladesh is committed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Government has adopted Delta Plan -2100 to build Bangladesh as the most developed county in the next century. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is committed to take Bangladesh forward through the path of prosperity which was dreamt by Bangabandhu.

We all should work with patriotic spirit to implement the dreams of Bangabandhu. The best way to show respect to Bangabandhu is to follow his thoughts on more equitable development and pursue the path of realizing some of those dreams through our endeavors, collective or individual. There is no contradictory that Bangabandhu gave us a nation, gave us a free state, gave us a language and in fact gave us everything that we can all be proud of.  As long as Bangladesh and Bangali will exist, Bangabandhu will remain as the eternal source of inspiration. He will remain in the hearts of the people and it’s not possible to wipe out his name from the hearts of the people.

That’s why legendary Poet Annada Shankar Roy said ,” Jotokal roba Padma, Megna, Gauri, Jamuna bohoman, totokal robe kirti tumar Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,” which when translated means, “As long as rivers Padma , Meghna, Gouri, Jamuna continue to flow, the legend of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will remain alive in the hearts of the people.”
