Participants at an exhibition jointly arranged by the Rural Development Academy the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) recently in Birol upazila of Dinajpur said with a steady rise in population and a subsequent decline in agricultural land and labour, the government has turned to technology to meet the growing demand for food. One of the new methods being promoted by the government promises to cut paddy production cost by half and a 15 to 30 per cent increase in production. Another goal of this unique project is to reduce the rising number of unemployment among the young generation by encouraging them to use modern technology and machines, cutting short the hardship of paddy cultivation process.
Innovation and adoption of time-befitting latest agriculture technology can increase crop production at reduced costs despite adverse impacts of climate change to ensure food security in the country. Adoption of the latest technology can make farm activities more profitable along with improving environment, soil health and fertility. Emphasis should be given on adaptation to global climate change and its adverse impacts on the agriculture sector.
It is encouraging that crop production in the country has increased substantially over the past few years. Strenuous efforts by farmers and others concerned and the modern method of crop cultivation have contributed to this success. But there is no scope for expressing complacency. Crop production should be increased further for feeding the burgeoning population.
Farmers should be motivated to produce more crops to meet the demand. The authorities should identify the problems facing the farmers and try to solve those as early as possible. Many farmers have to borrow money from moneylenders at high rate of interest. As a result, the cost of production of rice goes up. What is disappointing for the growers is that they do not get the due price of their produced rice. If the growers lose interest in growing rice it will leave a negative impact on the country’s overall food production.
Farmers should be provided with bank loans on easy terms and conditions. Besides, they should be supplied with agricultural inputs like improved seeds, fertilizers and pesticides. They should also be imparted training on the modern method of cultivation. Field officers of the agriculture department can monitor and supervise the activities of farmers.
