Avoid hugging, touching to prevent spread, says IEDCR

The Institute of Epide­miology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has advised people to avoid close personal contacts such as touching, hugging and handshake to prevent coronavirus spread in the country. The institute also advised to wash hands with soapy

water regularly. “It is possible to be free from coronavirus by doing these things properly,” said IEDCR Director of Professor Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora during a regular press briefing at the institute in the capital yesterday.

She also urged all not to touch the nose or eyes with the unclean hands. “Avoid contacting with someone who is already infected and also petting sick animals. Cook the fish, meat, eggs well. Stay home if sick. Use a mask if it’s important to go out. Avoid traveling overseas unless urgently needed.” The director said that 93 samples have been tested so far in the country for suspecting coronavirus. Of which, the presence of the virus has not been found yet. “We have to be prepared with all necessary measures to battle the virus,” she confirmed. She also said the temperature has no relation with the novel coronavirus because the virus has infected people living in countries with high temperatures also as it transmits person to person. “Coronavirus cannot survive at temperatures of 70°C. But, no country has such high temperature. It cannot be expected that the spread of coronavirus will decrease during summer,” she further said. Asking about the country’s preparedness for the risk, she added, “We have set up scanning machines in all the land ports and our strategy is to quickly identify patients and quarantine them.”
