The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested three people in connection with the murder of Rakib Hasnat Shipon, who was stabbed to death on Sunday in Hatirjheel. The police arrested Azad, Sujon, and Ibrahim from different parts of the capital on Wednesday night. The switchgear knife used to stab Shipon and his friend Manik was also recovered.
At a press briefing at the DMP media centre yesterday, Abdul Baten, additional police commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB), said that the main motive for Shipon’s murder was a mahalla-centric feud. “There was a conflict between teenage boys in Begunbari and Madhubagh,” he added. The additional police commissioner said that Azad was in a relationship with a girl in Madhubagh. On February 21, Azad's family
went to the girl’s house with a marriage proposal. Boys in Madhubagh insulted Azad’s family as a marriage proposal from Begunbari could never be accepted. Later, a clash between the two groups led to the incident.
Shipon and Manik were riding a motorcycle in Hatirjheel when Azad and his friends stopped the duo and stabbed them. Shipon was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
Baten urged guardians to take charge of their children’s actions and behaviour. He said that policing would be increased in residential hotels to stop unethical acts.
Referring to the Inns and Hotels Act, the additional police commissioner said: “It is mentioned in the act that hotel owners must provide the details of guests at the property to the nearest police station. Surveillance will be increased to stop unethical deeds.”
Asked about Shamima Nur Papiya, the expelled general secretary of Jubo Mohila League’s Narsingdi district unit, the DB official said they did not have the chance to interrogate Papiya. He said that any allegations levelled by former victims against Papiya would be investigated thoroughly.
