Today marks the first death anniversary of eminent poet Al Mahmud. To observe the day, three separate commemorative programmes have been organised in Dhaka, Chattogram and Brahmanbaria district.
Poet Al Mahmud Foundation general secretary Abid Azam informed that a commemorative programme ‘Al Mahmud Smaran’ will be held today at 5pm at Kabita Café of Katabon in the capital.
On the occasion of poet Al Mahumd’s death anniversary, Saral Rekha Prokashoni Sangstha published his unpublished epic poem ‘E Golper Sesh Nei, Shuru-o Chhilo Na’. This book is now available at the ongoing Book Fair (Stall No 618).
Nazmus Sayadat, director of publication said, “A large team, including artist Dhrubo Esh and writer Azra Parveen Sayeed, had been working for a long time to publish the unpublished manuscript ‘E Golper Sesh Nei, Shuru-o Chhilo Na’. We are pleased as we could present the publication to the readers.”
Besides, poet Al Mahmud’s two novels titled ‘Sohodora’ and ‘Ragini’ were published recently. On the other hand, his special publication ‘Itihas Dekho Bak Ghure Gechhe Pher Itihase’ and his poetry book ‘Amar Naame Dakchhe Pakhi’ will be published soon. All the five books of poet Al Mahmud has been scripted and edited by writer and journalist Abid Azam.
Born at Morail village in the then Brahmanbaria, Al Mahmud started his career as a journalist. With the appearance of his poetry books titled Sonali Kabin and Kaler Kolosh in 1966 he managed to establish his position in the domain of Bangla poetry.
He then penned ‘Mayabi Porda Dule Otho’, ‘Arobbo Rojonir Rajhash’, ‘Bakhtiyarer Ghora’ and ‘Nodir Bhitorer Nodi’. In addition to writing poetry, he wrote short stories, novels and essays such as ‘Pankourir Rakta’ and ‘Upamohadesh’.
Al Mahmud received the Bangla Academy Award in 1968 and Ekushey Padak in 1987. Other awards he received included Sufi Motaher Hossain Literary Gold Medal, Farrukh Ahmed Memorial Award, Kabi Jasimuddin Award, Alokta Sahitya Puruskar, Phillips Literary Award and Lalon Award.
Poet Al Mahmud died on February 15 in 2019 at the age of 82.
