Mushfiqur Rahim answered with his bat when he smoked a spell-binding century against Islami Bank-East Zone in the day one of the round-3 of the Walton- Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium (SKICS) in Cox’s Bazar yesterday.
It was told from the national team management that Mushfiqur Rahim, who skipped the round-1 of the BCL citing injury ground ahead of the Bangladesh team’s second phase tour in Pakistan for the Rawalpindi Test, has to prove his fitness playing Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) match to play the home series against Zimbabwe on home soil.
Mushfiq’s spell-binding century paved the way for his much-anticipated comeback to the ensuing series against East African side which will commence from February 22 in Dhaka.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB)-North Zone fell into danger when left-arm spinner Nayeem Hasan removed three top-order batsmen in the space of 11 runs while they were stuttering at 46-3 in 21.5 overs. Mushfiqur Rahim came to the crease and stopped the batting woes with captain Naeem Islam.
The duo hit 56 for the fourth-wicket stand before the fall of Naeem who was caught behind by Zakir Hasan off Nayeem Hasan after scoring 31. At this stage, North mislaid two wickets in the gap of nine runs that reeled them from 46-3 to 111-5. Mahmudul Hasan compounded North’s woes further when he was accountable for Ariful Haque. Therefore, Mushfiq added a useful 74 sixth-wicket with Mahidul Islam Ankon. Nayeem notched up his fifer to dismiss wicketkeeper-batsman Ankon for 23.
Mushfiq brought up his century after tea break and hit a crucial 58 with Sunzamul Islam for the eighth-wicket partnership. Just four runs later, he walked back to the pavilion having bowled for 140. He played mostly one-day style as he smacked 157-ball 140 that laced with 16 fours and a maximum.
Nayeem bettered his bowling performance when he victimized Salauddin Sakil to bowl North out for 272 and grabbed a jaw-dropping eight-wicket haul in his kitty. Before touring Pakistan, the promising spinner bagged six-wicket burst. He conceded 107 runs to claim eight scalps.
In reply, Islami Bank-East Zone mislaid two top-order batsmen-Pinak Ghosh and Mohammad Ashraful to put on three on the board before the bails were drawn for the second day.
At the SKICS Academy Ground in Cox’s Bazar, Walton-Central Zone compiled a paltry 235 against BCB-South Zone despite Marshall Ayub’s hundred. Central Zone lost Pakistan tour-returnee Saif Hassan and Nazmul Hossain Shanto cheaply.
Marshall Ayub stood tall against the South Zone bowlers but he did not receive ably support from the other end’s batsmen. He fell as the ninth batsman when they mustered 212. Marshall whacked a patient 186-ball 116, littered with a round dozen fours and two sixes.
Finally, Mustafizur Rahman late-fire of unbeaten 26-ball 30 helped Central Zone post 235 on the board. Off-spinner Mahedi Hasan captured three wickets. Shafiul Islam, Abdur Razzak and Nasum Ahmed snared a brace each.
