Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday advocated introducing a fixed day for paying taxes, which he believes would make the tax return procedure less time consuming and hassle-free, reports BSS.
Referring that people in the United States pay taxes on a fixed day on April 1 every year, the finance minister said the government would introduce the similar ‘tax day’ by 2018.
The minister was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the first ever Winter Tax Fair-2015 at Dhaka Officers Club in the capital.
He said the National Board of Revenue (NBR) had already been advised to work on introducing a fix day for tax-return submission by the people across the country.
Currently, the last day for tax payment for a financial year is September 30, but the date often gets extension on demand by taxpayers especially by the business communities. This year the last day of tax return has been extended to November 30 as there were few public  holidays in the past two months.
The minister emphasised on simplifying the tax return fill up process and building  cooperation between tax-payers and tax officials to create a hassle-free tax regime. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan and NBR chairman Nojibur Rahman  attended the inaugural programme of the fair, which will end on Saturday.
Nojibur Rahman said  that there would be no harassment from now on as the revenue board had taken a zero tolerance policy against any corruption, harassment, irregularity and misconduct.
At the programme, the taxes authorities awarded four highest individual taxpayers and honoured them as a Commercial Important Person (CIP) cards.
NBR has organised the winter tax fair simultaneously in six divisional headquarters besides Dhaka city.
At the fair, a good number of taxpayers submitted their annual tax returns when many got e-TINs.
