Out of 987 residents of Indian enclaves in Bangladesh who will leave for India, 63 left through the Burimari land port yesterday afternoon.
In the first phase, 195 people from Bashkata, Latamari and Gotamari enclaves are scheduled to leave for India. The rest will go later.
After the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) was signed between India and Bangladesh, around 55,000 residents of 162 enclaves in the two nations were given the opportunity to choose their citizenships. As many as 987 people opted for India from the Indian enclaves in Bangladesh,, while none from Bangladeshi enclaves in India wanted to come to Bangladesh.
It was heart wrenching to see people leaving their ancestral lands and homes at Gotamari village. They gathered at Daikhawa High School in the morning. The local administration brought them to Burimari under high security.
Those who will leave the Lotamari enclave in Patgram upazila and Uttor Gotamari of Hatibandha have already sold their lands and others assets to their relatives. Birendro Nath Barmon (55) and Manik Chandro (40), two such people, were teary eyed before leaving for India.
Barmon’s wife, Bala Moni (55) said they signed up to leave like many others, but now she is worried about living in an unfamiliar land.
It is learnt that the West Bengal government of India has built residences for 49 families at Votbari in Mekhliganj of Cooch Behar district.
Patgram upazila nirbahi officer of Patgram, Patgram upazila chairman,  press workers and relatives were present at zero point on the Bangladesh side during the departure. On the Indian side, Forward Bloc MLA Paresh Chandra Adhikari, Trinamool Congress Cooch Behar district president Rabindranath Ghosh and Cooch Behar additional district magistrate Ayesha Rani received the new Indian citizens at Changrabandha point.
