EU condemns attack on Italian priest

European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon yesterday condemned the attack on Italian doctor and priest Piero Parolari in Dinajpur, calling upon the government to promptly bring the perpetrators to justice.
Referring to earlier incidents related to killing of two foreigners, he said that repetition of such acts is a cause for concern for everyone.
“This is the third incident in less than two months where a foreign national has come under brutal aggression and the second targeting of a European citizen,” Ambassador Mayaudon said in a statement, wishing Piero Parolari a prompt and full recovery.
“The repetition of such acts of violence is obviously a matter of concern for all,” he added.
The envoy urged the government to take adequate measures in an expedited manner to bring both instigators and perpetrators to justice.
Meanwhile, the United States Embassy in Dhaka has wished the injured Italian citizen a quick recovery.
“We wish Father Pietro Parolari a speedy recovery,” Nancy VanHorn, spokesperson of the Embassy, told The Independent in an email communication yesterday.
Meanwhile, on the heels of the attack on the Italian priest and call of hartal by Jamaat-e-Islami in connection with the Appellate Division verdict, British Foreign and Commonwealth Office updated its travel advice for its citizens on Wednesday, asking them to remain vigilant.
“There is a high threat from terrorism. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has claimed responsibility for the recent murders of two foreign nationals, an attack on the Shia community in which 2 people died, and a knife attack at a police checkpoint in Dhaka in which one police officer was killed,” said the travel advice.
“On Wednesday 18 November, an Italian national was shot and wounded by three men on a motorbike in Dinjapur in the north-west of Bangladesh,” it said.
“Further attacks targeting westerners may occur and could be indiscriminate. You should be particularly vigilant, consider your movements carefully and take appropriate security precautions. Keep a low profile in all public spaces and limit your attendance at events where westerners may gather, for example in hotels or conference centres,” said the advice.
“Jama’at-e-Islami has called a countrywide hartal (strike) from 6am to 6pm on Thursday 19 November in protest against the High Court (Appellate Division) upholding the death sentences of two individuals previously convicted of war crimes,” it said.
South Korean Embassy in Dhaka on Wednesday also urged its citizens to remain cautious against the backdrop of the attack on the Italian in Dinajpur, said a source.
