Imams can help curb social evils: Speakers

Imams have a vital role in preventing social and moral degradation, by curbing all kinds of evils, especially fundamentalism, terrorism and violence against women, observed speakers at a function in the city yesterday. They were addressing a certificate distribution ceremony of the 844th batch of imams held at the Imam Training Academy of Islamic Foundation, Khulna office at Boyra in the city. The speakers noted imams are the leaders who can create influence in the society so that people can move forward to success in every sphere of life. They urged the imams not to show any discriminatory treatment about religion, age, colour and gender while doing social works. Imams should also work to fight crimes like corruption, population explosion, eve-teasing, sexual diseases, violence against women and drug addiction, they opined. The discussants also said the Islamic scholars should take the responsibility of preventing people form misleading the public about religion.  They underscored the need for proper motivation and counseling among the new generation imams so that they could supplement the government efforts in curbing militancy and terrorism along with completing the trial process of the war criminals. The speakers called upon all imams to keep vigil so that no vested quarter could use the mosques for their political interests. They also asked the Imams for delivering sermon (Khutba) before Juma prayers to unmask the culprits to make the people aware about the anti-Islamic activities of some vested quarters. They called on the imams to make the best use of the knowledge they received through training in developing moral values to establish basic human rights.  Logical approach towards Islam can bring peace and prosperity for the humanity, the remarked.  Lawmaker of Khulna sadar constituency Mizanur Rahman Mizan , also general secretary of Awami League (AL) Khulna city unit, addressed it and distributed certificates among the trainees as the chief guest.  Director of Islamic Foundation, Khulna division Md Lokman Hossain and president of AL Sonadanga thana unit Siddiqur Rahman Bulu Biswas were present as special guests.
Deputy Director of Imam Training Academy, Khulna Md Shahin-bin-Zaman presided over the function.  Mizanur Rahman said there are crimes of various sorts in the present society.
Misconceptions and anomalies are also there due to lack of proper and updated knowledge based on moral and religious values.
