Dhaka ranked the fourth worst in the Air Quality Index (AQI) yesterday both in the morning and evening. The capital had an AQI score of 196 at 08:30am and 177 at 5.50pm. That two value indicates that the air quality in the capital was ‘unhealthy’. Mongolia’s Ulaanbaatar, Pakistan’s Lahore and India’s Delhi occupied the top three positions in the list of cities with worst air with AQI scores of 352, 277 and 239 respectively in the morning. Meanwhile, Bosnia Herzegovina’s Sarajevo, Mongolia’s Ulaanbaatar, India’s Kolkata held the top three positions in the list of cities with worst air with AQI scores of 241, 202 and 185 respectively in the evening.
Dhaka topped the list of cities with the worst air quality in the AQI on Wednesday and Thursday.
When the AQI score is between 151 and 200,
everyone may experience health effects while members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.
The air quality is categorized as good when the AQI score remains between 0-50 while the air is moderate when the number is 51-100. When the score is between 101 and 150, the air is classified as unhealthy for sensitive groups. However, a score between 151 and 200 means that the air is unhealthy, and when the number is between 201 and 300, the air is classified as very unhealthy.
In Bangladesh, the AQI is based on five criteria of pollutants - Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2 and Ozone (O3). In the evening, PM2.5 was 106.3 µg/m³.
The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is, and what associated health effects might be a concern for them.
Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution. The air quality usually improves during the monsoon.
