With the theme ‘Seismic Movement or Transmission’, the curtain rose on the fifth edition of Dhaka Art Summit (DAS) on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital yesterday. Since 2012, Samdani Art Foundation, in partnership with BSA, has been organising the biennale art extravaganza which provides a rare opportunity to experience such multi-dimensional works of art from all across the world under one roof.
State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid inaugurated the art summit as the chief guest at the National Art Plaza Auditorium yesterday morning. BSA Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky presided over the ceremony, and DAS Chairman Farooq Sobhan delivered speeches at the programme. Co-founder and Director of Samdani Art Foundation, Nadia Samdani delivered welcome speech.
Speakers at the inauguration said, “This exhibition has provided an opportunity to build a relation globally. We can take pride in being one of the largest events of painting in South Asia.”
The speakers also added that Bangladesh has a reputation of being an art enthusiastic nation. The Dhaka Art Summit is important not only for Bangladesh but also for the global context.
Thanking Samdani Art Foundation for organising the Dhaka Art Summit, State Minister KM Khalid said, “The arrangement which has provided an opportunity to witness the artworks of world-renowned artists as well as Bangladeshi artists under the same roof certainly deserves appreciation.”
Nadia Samdani said, “I hope the works of art and ideas presented across the nine-day art festival will inspire you to dream, think and act with creative and collaborative solutions to better the world we inhabit together. It’s our goal that Dhaka Art Summit will not just be about the nine-day of shows, talks, performances and workshops, but that instate the energy that is released in these nine days will have a ripple effect all over the world in the days, weeks, months and years to come.”
More than 500 painters, artists, sculptors, curators, art critics, art professionals, art collectors and architects, from different countries, including Bangladesh, are participating in this grand exhibition.
The first performance on the inaugural day took place at gallery 6 of the National Art Plaza. Bangladeshi artist Ariful Kabir participated in the Samdani Art Award Performance at 10am, while the Otobong Enkangar live art titled ‘Landverson’ took place in the lobby of the second floor.
A panel discussion titled ‘Design in Era of Climate-Catastrophy’ was also held on the opening day at the art gallery.
A performance action titled ‘Movimientos Emisores de Existencia’ under the direction of Hector Zamorah was displayed in the lobby of the first floor of the National Picture Gallery.
A puppet show titled ‘Golpo ta shobar’ by Gidori Bauli was also arranged for the children. The final performance of the opening day titled ‘Together’ took place at the National Art Plaza gallery in the evening, where Arunaddhyachal and Alexix Vozia participated.
On the other hand, a special exhibition has been organised to mark the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as part of the summit. The exhibition titled ‘Lighting the fire of freedom Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’ is on display on the first floor of the National Art Plaza.
The DAS is presenting various art projects from Bangladesh, India, Afghanistan, France, Italy, Iran, Sri Lanka, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom and many well-known artists from different countries. DAS includes seminars, symposiums, solo and group lectures in the country and abroad with the participation of art critic and art collectors. Also, a documentary exhibition of art subjects has also been included.
Ministry of Culture Affairs is supporting to organise the fifth edition of DAS, while Department of Information and Communication Technology also extended its support. Title sponsor of the summit is Golden Harvest.
The exhibition is open to the visitor without any registration every day from 10am to 8pm till February 15.
