Children, cheering with joy, along with their guardians thronged the Ekushey book fair venue yesterday (Friday) which was the first Shishu Prahar (Children's hour) of this year’s book fair. Bangla Academy authority arranged the Shishu Prahar to make the month-long fair more attractive to children, on every Friday and Saturday from 11am to 1pm, at the children's corner in Suhrawardy Udyan.
The entire venue wore a colorful look with the presence of children and adolescents in their bright clothes. Alongside purchasing books and raiding various stalls with their parents, children were seen having a fun time with mascots of popular characters of children’s shows. Much to their delight, Haalum, and Tuktuki – characters of Bangla television series Sisimpur – appeared before them in reality on the 'Dada Bhai' premises and gave them pleasure by greeting them.
Like previous years, to children, the main attraction of the fair was the Shishu Chhattar. Originally a part of the fair premises was dedicated for children with the aim to make them interested in reading books. In line with the intention of the authorities, the Shishu Chattar was colourfully decorated to welcome the adolescents.
As this year, Bangla Academy has taken up the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the theme of the fair and dedicated the fair to the Father of the Nation. Along with other books for children; books on Bangabandhu and his family, liberation war of 71 are dominating the stalls this year. Books such as '7 e March er Bashon', 'Chotoder Hridoye Bangabandhu', 'Ebarer Sangram', 'Russel er Golpo’ have been stockpiled at various stalls.
Meanwhile, law enforcers tightened security in the premises especially due to the presence of hundreds of children in the fair yesterday.
Before the arrival of mascots Halum and Tuktuki, a team of policemen were seen already stationed at the stage.
"We have a team of eight policemen here to provide security to children," said Sub-Inspector of Police (SI) Rabindranath Barman.
