Schools charging extra fees from SSC candidates

At least 78 educational institutions in Jhenidah are charging extra fee from Secondary School Certificate (SSC) students to fill up forms.
The institutions include 53 high schools and 25 dakhil madrashas in Kaliganj and Shailkupa upazilas of the district.
The authorities of these educational institutions are taking Tk 1,300 extra from each candidate for filling up forms for upcoming SSC examination..
The authorities are showing various reasons against charging extra money that includes special coaching fee, session charges, scout fee, school development fund charge, extra education fee and regular monthly fee, alleged candidates and guardians.
Students of Sheikhpara Rahatunnesa high school, Benipur high school, Mirzapur Amena Khatun high school and Bakaisiddhi high school under Shailkupa upazila are allegedly charging Tk 2,065 from candidates of Humanities and Commerce groups while Tk 2,150 from the candidates of Science group. They asked the respective headmasters to return the additional fees but the headmasters refused to return the money.
Shailkupa upazila education officer Md Akram Hossain Khan said the High Court in a recent verdict ordered school authorities to take Tk 1,495 from each student of Science group and Tk 1,395 from students of Humanities group for filling up forms, as the said amounts are stipulated by the education boards.
He further said, they will take stern action against related teachers and schools.
A few students alleged that if they don’t pay the extra charges, they will fail in practical examination.
Students of Hat-Barobazaar High School in Kaliganj alleged that the school authorities charged Tk 2,630 from candidates of Humanities and Commerce groups while Tk 2,720 from the candidates of Science group.
Students in Barobazaar Girls High School of Humanities and Commerce groups in the same upazila alleged that the school authorities charged Tk 2,500 from them while Tk 2,600 from the candidates of Science group.
Headmaster of Hat-Barobazaar High School Rafiqul Islam said ‘I don’t know about the matter because, I have joined here just last month.’
Headmaster of Bezpara high school Firoz Ahmed said we are taking fees on the basis of student’s ability.
Headmaster of Sheikhpara Rahatunnesa High School Masud Karim said at first they charged Tk 3,175 from the candidates of all groups but now they are taking Tk 2,150 from the Science group students and Tk 2,065 from the students of Humanities and Commerce groups jointly.
According to Jhenidah district education office sources, there are 248 secondary high schools and 110 Dakhil madrashas in six upazilas of the district.
Kaliganj upazila education officer MA Arif said ‘If we get any allegation against any school in this regard, we will take action against them.’
Deputy Commissioner of Jhenidah Md. Mahbub Alam Talukdar said no one should violate the government rules. If any one disobey the law, the district administration will take action the  
irregularities.
