A Jamalpur court yesterday convicted five people and sentenced them to death for the murder of minor boy Mostakim Billah, 7, after abduction in 2001.
The condemned convicts are Lokman Ali, 57, his son Tofael Islam Hira, 35, of Darihamidpur village, Md Aynul Haque, 62 and his son Md Anwar Hossain, 37, of Nandina village, and Sohel Rana Shipan, 36, of Kharkharia village under Jamalpur district. Of them, Hira, Hossain and Shipan remain fugitive.
According to the prosecution, the convicts picked up Muttasim Billah, 7, son of Lutfur Rahman, an expatriate, from his house alluring him of giving soft drinks at Amlapara in the district town on May 31, 2001.
Later, they took him to the house of Anwar Hossain in Nandina area and strangled him to death with a pillow.
Following the complaint of Muttasim’s family, police arrested Shipon and as per his confessional statement they recovered the body of Muttasim from a room of Anwar Hossain’s house, 80 days after the murder.

Shikdar found the five accused guilty and handed down the death penalty by hanging. The court also fined them Tk 5,000 each.
