The only water ambulance is being damaged due to lack of proper care in Charbha­drasan upazila of the district.
The government had given ambulance boat for rendering quick medical services to the poor people living in remote char lands (shoal) in the upazila.
According to Charbha­drasan upazila health complex sources, the health department gave the ambulance to the Charbhadrasan upazila health complex on December 22, 2013.
Hafizur Rahman, the then upazila health and family planning officer of the health complex, received the boat.
To ensure the health service to char people, the ambulance was handed over to AKM Obeydul Bari Dipu, chairman of Char Horirampur union parisad, as per the decision of upazila parisad aiming to bring patients, especially children, women and elderly people from chars to the health complex.
Locals said though the boat was used to carry patient to the health complex for some days it is lying abandoned for one and a half years now. It is lying uncared for in Jakrersura canal in adar union.
They also said engine and other parts of the boat have already been damaged.
UP chairman AKM Obeydul Bari Dipu said the boat sank in the Jakrersura canal during the last rainy season.
He also said the boat has no engineman and it has not been in use for a long time.
Charbhadrasan Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Farzana Siddika said: “I shall take necessary steps after verifying the mater to ensure the health services to the people of char lands with the help of the water ambulance.”
