The BNP remained silent on the upholding of its standing committee member Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury’s death sentence by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday. The party issued no official statement and leaders kept their mum till the filing of this report.
Leaders said they have not yet received any instruction from the party high commend in this regard. They said the party may come up with a formal reaction after going through the final verdict that rejected Chowdhury’s review petition.
Senior party leaders refused to speak on the verdict, saying that the party spokesperson is the authority to talk on the party’s behalf. But the spokesperson could not be contacted over phone.
While BNP vice-chairman Maj. (Retd) M Hafizudidn Ahmed refused to comment, standing committee member Brig. Gen. (Retd) ASM Hannan Shah told reporters that party leaders would meet before stating their reaction publicly.
BNP chairperson’s advisers, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and Ahmed Azam Khan, refused to speak as well. They said they would not comment on the topic since it is a sectional case. They added that the party spokesperson will speak on it.
The BNP has arranged a two-day programme, starting from Friday, to mark the 51st birth anniversary of its senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman. As part of it, the party will hold a discussion on ‘Democracy is the Precondition for Development’ in the city.
The programme will include cutting cakes, a ‘milad mahfil’ and a blood donation camp at the party headquarters tomorrow (Friday).
