The ruling Awami League and several other political and social groups and individuals yesterday welcomed the Appellate Division verdict upholding death penalties of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed and BNP stalwart SQ Chowdhury, reports BSS.
In his impromptu reaction to BSS, Awami League presidium member and Health Minister Mohammad Nasim the apex court verdict proved that the incumbent government correctly exposed to justice the perpetrators of 1971 crimes against humanity. “We welcome the verdict . . . I think all the forces loyal to independence and those who believe in social justice and equality are happy,” Nasim said adding that he expected the verdict to be executed within a short time.
AL’s Dhaka city unit geeneral secretary and Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya (Bir Bikram) called the verdict a “victory of the freedom fighters”.
“The verdict against the war criminals could not be thwarted through conspiracy, murders and violence or appointment of foreign lobbyists. Te rule of law has been established through this verdict,” he said.
Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam the verdict indicated that the culture of impunity no more existed in Bangladesh as “our Prime Minister was determined to hold the war crimes trial”.
“No power on earth now could create barrier in execution of the verdict,” he said.
Communist Party of Bangladesh Mujahidul Islam Selim and general secretary Syed Abu Zafar in a statement called the verdict “a judgment in favour of justice”.
“The long cherished expectations of the people have been fulfilled . . . We hope it to be executed expeditiously,” they said.
Udichi Shilpy Goshthy president and distinguished civil society figure Kamal Lohani said the apex court largely freed the nation from a deep stigma while in a statement signed along with the cultural group’s general secretary Probir Shikdar he urged the government to execute it expeditiously.
A former journalist of Reuters Nizam Uddin Ahmed, who is now the business desk editor of the Daily Observer, testified before the International Crimes Tribunal against Chowdhury as a victim of his torture in 1971.
“We had won the War of Liberation in 1971 and now we won the legal battle,” he said.
The verdict, Ahmed said, proved that the anti-liberations forces including Rajakars and Al-Badrs could not be able to mislead the people anymore as their “days have ended”.
Bangladesh Online Activist Forum (BOAF) president Kabir Chowdhury Tanmoy said, the verdict would soothe the souls of millions of martyrs including the intellectuals.
“Bodies of Mujahid and SQ Chowdhury should be sent to Pakistan after early execution of the verdict,” he said.
Chairman of Bangladesh Shishu Academy and popular litterateur Selina Hossain said, “It’s an expected verdict. I think that it would be success of the people of the country if the verdict is executed at the earliest.”
