The two-day divisional ‘Information & Knowledge Fair on Disaster Reduction and Adaptation with Climate Change 2015’ kicked-off at Rangpur yesterday with a call for sharing information, knowledge and experience to reduce disaster risks, reports UNB.
The Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP-II) under the Ministry of Disaster Management & Relief with assistance of the Divisional Commissioner’s Office has been organising the fair at Town Hall ground in the city.
The main objectives of the fair are to create awareness among people of Rangpur division about natural disasters and risks, climate change, its adverse impacts, sharing local knowledge and experience and way-outs to reduce disaster risks.
Presentations by experts, photo- poster exhibition, drawing, quiz, essay and debate competitions on floods, droughts, earthquake, diversion of river course for preventing erosion and forestations on char islands are main attractions in the two-day fair.
Different government and non-government organisations and institutions have set up 40 stalls in the fair displaying various presentations on disaster risks, adverse impacts of climate change, innovations and technologies for way-outs and adaptation.
National Project Director (Additional Secretary) of CDMP-II Mohammad Abdul Kaiyum inaugurated the fair by releasing balloons in the opening ceremony with Divisional Commissioner (Additional Secretary) Muhammad Dilwar Bakht in the chair. Secretary to the Ministry of Disaster Management & Relief Shah Kamal participated in different sessions on the inaugural day and visited 40 stalls set up by government, non-government and other organisations and public university, as the chief guest.
Additional Divisional Commissioners Kazi Hassan Ahmed (General) and Minu Sheel (Revenue), officials of the divisional and eight district administrations under Rangpur division, experts of CDMP and different GO-NGOs were present.
Earlier, a huge colourful rally, participated by high officials, experts, university and college teachers, students, victims of natural disasters, hundreds of people from all walks in the society, was brought out in the city streets.
Experts of CDMP, Begum Rokeya University, government and nongovernment organisations today delivered presentations in two technical sessions styled ‘Sharing Experience on Reducing Disaster Risks & Building of a Disaster-resilience Bangladesh.’
Officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension, Department of Fisheries, Department of Animal Resources, Department of Environment, Department of Forest, CDMP-II, NGOs, students, journalists, civil society members, disaster victims and common people took part in the open discussion sessions.
The District Shilpokola Academy and District Information Office have been organising colourful cultural evenings daily on the fair premises focusing knowledge and experience on disaster risks and way-outs to adapt with natural calamities.
