Cabinet body clears project to train 60,000 Rohingyas

The Cabinet Committee on Purchase has approved a project of the disaster management ministry to train at least 60,000 Rohingya youths to improve access to basic services and build faster social resilience of their population living in refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. The approval was given at a committee meeting at the secretariat yesterday. It was chaired by the finance minister.

A senior official of the Cabinet Division told reporters that the World Food Programme (WFP) would implement the project aimed at involving Rohingya youths to take part in development work under the "Emergency Multi Sector Rohingya Crisis Response Project".

The International Development Association (IDA), a member of the World Bank Group, would provide Tk. 297.15 crore as grant for implementing the project, he said. Under the project, the authorities would improve the services and meet the basic needs of the Rohingyas by developing infrastructure.

The 60,000 Rohingya youths would be appointed under UN agencies as workers on a "need basis" after giving them training, the official informed. According to the proposal, the authorities would plant grass on 90 hectares with the help of Rohingya youths to protect the areas around their camps in Cox’s Bazar from erosion.

At the same time, the Rohingya youths would help construct a six-kilometre road, 60,000 sq km of slope protection, a 2.4km pathway for pedestrians, a bamboo bridge and assist in the rehabilitation work, the proposal says. Keeping Rohingya youths busy would help reduce crimes like smuggling of yaba and child marriage, the official added.

Sources said that since August 25, 2017, violence in Rakhine state in Myanmar, more than 7,45,000 Rohingyas have entered Cox’s Bazar and are living in extremely congested conditions in 34 camps.
