Lambasting Bangladesh national cricket team’s performance, game plan and strategy, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan Papon said that he would sit with players, team management and coaching stuff to sort out several issues following the Tigers’ disappointing T20 series defeat against Pakistan.
Nazmul Hassan Papon thinks Tigers’ batting display wasn’t up to the standard while decision to bat first on both occasions in a new condition were totally illogical.
“It never seemed to me Bangladesh playing such T20 cricket. Especially the way we play T20s, Pakistan series was totally opposite. We failed to score runs despite having a good start. Even after 12-14 overs our approach was defensive and such situation never appeared before us. It was totally a new experience to me.”
“After the first match I sat with Tamim and Riyad and asked them why they opted to bat on a condition that was quite unfamiliar to them. They replied it a was good pitch to bat on. They also said it was a 150 wicket which I think below 160 isn’t a defendable score in modern day cricket. Again, after the match they remarked it was difficult to bat. So, I found no similarity with their opinion and playing style,” Papon told reporters at his Beximco Pharmaceuticals office in the capital yesterday.
“Even when we played the first pink ball Test match against India we decided to bat first. The same thing happened in Pakistan. I think we need to discuss why such decisions has been taken and who is responsible for that. One thing I can only say it’s not possible to win matches against any opposition scoring only 130-140. The issue is something serious and I need to sit with everyone,” he further added.
The BCB chief also raised question on Tigers’ inconsistent batting order on both matches.
“One thing made me more surprised when Naim got out, why Mahedi, who was supposed to bat at No 7, came out to bat at No 3 instead of Liton or Soumya. I don’t know whether they made an experiment but it was questionable. It was obvious Tamim, Liton and Naim at the top three. Since Mushfiqur was missing Riyad should have batted up the order but he came to bat in the last overs which wasn’t supposed to happen,” the BCB boss rued Tigers' reshuffle in the batting order.
Nazmul Hasan Papon also reiterated that key players’ missing from important series making a negative impact in the team and it’s becoming more difficult for the Board to set the team balance properly.
“Before the India tour, we missed Shakib following his ban. Tamim skipped the tour which was another blow for us. We replaced Tamim with Naim Shiekh. In the Pakistan series Tamim returned which forced us to change the previous combination. Again, after Mushfiqur’s omission, the No 4 position emerged as another problem for us. For example, if we will field a new player at No 4 in absence of Mushfiq and he plays good cricket, his place in the team will hang in the balance because Mushquir will be back for Zimbabwe series. So, we need to be informed earlier about their absence and I think we need to work on that area,” Papon said the team management struggle to make a perfect combination when players’ abruptly pull out their names.
