EC should probe Sunday clash: Quader

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader has said the Election Commission (EC) should carry out a fair investigation into Sunday’s clash during an election campaign of BNP’s mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain at Gopibagh in the capital. “The members of different law enforcing agencies are now under the control the EC as, therefore it can direct law enforcing agencies to take action against anyone involvement in Sunday’s clash,” Quader said while briefing reporters on current issues at the Secretariat. While briefing diplomats on Sunday, BNP claimed that some ruling party supporters carried out attacks on their party nominated mayoral candidate Tabith Awal and his supporters during electioneering but video footage of the incident does not prove their claim, said Quader. The footage shows the BNP candidate (Ishraque) himself was kicking the door of an election office during the clash, Quader added.

Replying to a question about EC MahbubTalukdar’s remark that there is no level-playing field within the Election Commission (EC), Quader said that having different opinion on an issue was the commission’s internal affair.

But Quader said that he does not support the way one of the election commissioners is making public statements regarding discontent within the EC. BNP and Mahbub Talukder are reacting the same way and it feels like the election commissioner is taking a stance for a certain political party, Quader added.
