DNCC, DSCC mayoral elections

AL, BNP candidates upbeat about victory

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

With the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) elections barely three days away, both Awami League and BNP mayoral and councillor candidates have been carrying out hectic campaigning. The candidates are leaving no stone unturned to ensure victory in the civic polls. They are performing door-to-door campaigning and making various promises to woo voters.

The AL-nominated mayoral candidates say the voters will cast their votes in favour of the boat symbol to keep alive the development of the nation. But the BNP-nominated mayoral candidates claim that they will ensure landslide victories if the election is held in a free and fair manner.

Speaking at a public meeting in Hajinagar area, AL mayoral candidate for DSCC, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, yesterday said the ruling party candidates would get a huge victory in the city polls. No one will be able to stop their victory as the city residents want a developed city, he noted.

“If I get elected, I would ensure all civic facilities in the Dhaka South area. Dhaka will be turned into a beautiful city where city dwellers will be able to access their basic rights,” he said.

He conducted campaigning at ward no. 68 and its adjacent areas seeking votes in favour of ‘boat’.

Speaking at a rally, AL-nominated mayoral candidate for DNCC, Atiqul Islam, yesterday expressed hope that they would get a huge victory if voters turn up at the polling booths on election day.

“More voters at the polling stations mean more votes for the boat symbol,” he said.

Tabith Awal, the BNP mayoral candidate for DNCC, yesterday urged

citizens to vote for the ‘sheaf of paddy’ symbol of the BNP. “If the voters can cast their votes, we’ll be victorious,” he said.

Tabith was speaking at a rally in the Uttar Khan Helal market of the capital.

“Make sure you cast your vote on polling day, even though the government will try its best to put up obstacles so that you can’t exercise your franchise,” he said.

He said the ballot box is the only way to protest against the current government’s corruption.

“Khaleda Zia became the prime minister in 1991 through your votes. Are you ready now? Begum Zia is watching you. You just have to come forward with courage,” he told citizens.

Ishraque Hossain, the BNP mayoral candidate for DSCC, said he would sacrifice his life for the well-being of people. He was exchanging views with journalists at the National Press Club.

Ishraque also held a view-exchange meeting with leaders of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), Bangladesh Photo Journalists’ Association, and Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB).

Speaking on the occasion, Ishraque urged the Election Commission to make sure that the last national election does not repeated where opposition candidates were steamrolled. He also expressed his gratitude to journalists for giving his poll campaign a good coverage in the media.

“I grew up here and know perfectly well the problems of the city. If elected, I would do my best to solve the problems and make the city worth living,” he said.

Dr Khondokar Mosharrof Hossain, member of the BNP standing committee, Saiful Alam, president of the National Press Club, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, editor of The Daily Observer, and Abdus Shahid, Dhaka Journalists’ Union president, also spoke on the occasion.
