Considering the seriousness of the infectious coronavirus outbreak in China, the Bangladesh government is trying to bring back its citizens from the affected areas, after being shown the green light from the local administration there. The government has decided to bring them back by a special flight. Quoting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, state minister for foreign affairs, Mohammad Shahriar Alam, said in a post on his Facebook page yesterday that the PM has directed that arrangements will be made to bring back Bangladeshis from areas where the coronavirus has spread. “The PM has directed
that arrangements be made for those who want to return home. We have started talking with the Chinese government in this regard. The process to bring them back will depend on the consent of the local administration considering the reality. Our main target is the security of our country’s citizens,” the post said. The post further said preliminary instructions would be issued later in the day on the preparation of the list of interested nationals who want to return from China.
After a meeting in the capital, Shahriar told journalists that the government is finding out about the Bangladeshi nationals in China. Soon after the outbreak of coronavirus, which has claimed nearly 80 lives so far, concerns were raised in Bangladesh as many Bangladeshi students and others live in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province which is the epicenter of the contagious coronavirus outbreak.
The Bangladesh embassy in Beijing has also started emergency support needed for Bangladeshis in China amid the crisis.
Directorate General of Health Services sources said 2,610 people were screened at the Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, but no one has been detected with coronavirus.
