Bangladesh hails decision to cancel Asian Indoor Athletics

Six athletes of Bangladesh are not going China to take part in the ninth edition of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championship due to Coronavirus when they were supposed to go on January 9 to take part in the competition scheduled to take place from February 12 and13 in the Hungjun City, China.

All the International Athletics Organizations (Asian and World) have already canceled the venue of the Asian Indoor Athletics to take place on January 12 and 13  and the World Indoor Championship scheduled to be held on March-12-15 in Nanjin, China is also under threat.   

Sprinter Ismail Hossain of Bangladesh Navy, who became the fastest man of the country in recently concluded 43rd National Athletics Championship in Chattogram, Hassan Ali of BKSP were selected to compete in the 60 meters sprint.

Besides the sprinters, Mahfuzur Rahman, the silver medal winner in the SA Games in Nepal, Al Amin (Navy) for long jump, Jahir for 400 meters, and Al Amin (Army) for 800 and 1500 meters were also selected during the national championship in Chattogram for China tour.   

Abdur Rakib Montu, the general secretary of the Bangladesh Athletics Federation (BAF) confirmed it to reporters yesterday.

Montu said that they received a letter yesterday through a mail from the organsiers about the cancelation of the competition.

Montu said, “It was absolutely a right decision, if the competition was not cancelled we will not send our athletes. We hailed the cancellation decision as it would have been risk to be affected any athlete from the globe by Coronavirus,” said Montu.
