Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday hoped that roads would be safer gradually with the increased presence of female drivers. At a certificate giving ceremony organised by BRAC, he said, “I believe that the probability of road accidents will reduce as many as female drivers will be recruited.”
Titled ‘Women behind the wheel for road safety’, the event was organised at the BRAC Centre Inn in the capital to handover certificates among 11 women who got professional driving training from the organisation.
Quader said the women drivers drive vehicles with cool head and they do not take risks. “If female drivers do not get jobs after completing training their dedication to work may reduce,” he said about recruiting women drivers in the state-owned Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC).
Dipa Chakma, a driver who got certificate on the day, requested the minister for ensuring toilet facilities for them and preventing sexual harassment on roads.
Asked about BNP’s allegation that the government is using everything to win the polls, Quader said BNP beats around the bush. “BNP will have to prove where Awami League violates the electoral code of conduct and how the government interferes into the polls,” he said. According to him, “BNP has apprehension of losing the election. So, they are finding different excuses for staying away from the election.”
