‘Thief’ lynched in Jashore

A suspected thief was lynched allegedly by an angry mob at Shubhorara Mathpara village under Abhaynagar upazila in Jashore district early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Ilias Sheikh, 40, son of Hakim Sheikh of the same upazila. Local and police sources said Ilias was caught by local people as he was stealing a motor van near the house of Haji Asad Bhuiyan around 4:00am.

He was given a heavy beating by the locals only to embrace an ungraceful death on the spot. Tipped off, the law enforcers rushed to the spot around 4:30am and recovered the body. Later, they sent the body to Jashore Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

When contacted, Additional Superintendent of Police Md Touhidul Islam confirmed the incident.

He said Ilias was accused of several cases of stealing. A case was filed with Abhaynagar Police Station in this connection.
