Prime Minister’s ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy yesterday expressed his optimism that the export of country’s IT and technology sector will exceed earnings from garments sector within very short time as the sector is growing very rapidly. “Today on the record officially, Bangladesh’s IT export exceed $1 billion. . . I believe within a very short time, we will cross our garments export through technology export,” he said at the inaugural ceremony of a three-day Digital Bangladesh Mela at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the capital yesterday.
However, he said, as most IT services are internet based and exports are happening over the internet, it is impossible to track the true volume. “We believe that there is at least another billion or two billion US dollars in export that is happening unofficially through the internet that is not being tracked. So, we are very well on our way to catch our garments industry in terms of our IT services” he said.
Joy also expressed his hope that the country will roll out 5-G technologies with the rest of the world. He said that earlier, 30 million mobile phones had to be imported but now 20 million mobile phones are manufactured in the country. The country is also exporting mobile phones that are international standard.
PM advisor also said that one could not imagine all these 10 years ago. The operators were not keen on launching 3G, 4G service. They talked about the backbone, they talked about the data users. But the ruling government has changed the scenario of the IT sector in the country. Chaired by Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar, the function was addressed by Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Posts, Telecommunication and Information Technology AKM Rahmatullah, Huawei Technologies (Bangladesh) Ltd CEO Zhang Zhengjun and Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Nur-ur Rahman. Mustafa Jabbar said state run mobile operators Teletalk will be established as the leading mobile phone operator in the country by 2021. Now you can be optimistic about BSCCL, BCSCL and BTCL. These are now standing as successful organizations.
At least 82 organisations (25 stalls, 29 mini pavilions and 28 pavilions) were participated to showcase their products and services. A separate corner is setup at the fair to uphold the biography of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman through technology.
The fair remain open at 10am to 8pm for all till 18 January.
