Some senior leaders of the Jatiya Party (JP) yesterday slammed the party’s chief patron Raushan Ershad’s decision to appoint 16 leaders, including her son Shad Ershad, to different top-level posts of the party. While talking to The Independent, several senior leaders of the party on condition of anonymity said Raushan has no power to appoint any leader to any such post. Rather, they observed, she could have recommended some names to the party chairman.
Earlier on Wednesday, Raushan, who is also the leader of the opposition in parliament, appointed her son Shad and another JP leader MA Sattar as the party’s co-chairmen with 11 others including Maj (retd) Khaled Akhter, Delowar Hossain, Raushan Ara Mannan, Mahjabeen Morshed as the JP presidium members. Besides, she also made Amanat Hossain and Md Yahiya as the vice chairmen.
“The party constitution was recently passed in the JP council. Therefore, she cannot take any such decision of appointing leaders to different posts on her own. As a senior guardian of the party, she could place recommendations before the party chairman seeking latter’s consideration,” said a senior presidium member of the party.
When asked whether there is any possibility of further split in the party following the recent appointments, the leader said, the party will remain united at any cost and such appointments will not be accepted.
Meanwhile, JP Chairman GM Quader, in a statement immediately after Raushan’s press release on the appointments, called upon the party leaders to ignore the press release.
He also urged media not to publish any “confusing news” from Raushan end.
“Raushan has no jurisdiction according to the party charter to appoint anyone to any party post,” GM Quader said in the statement.
According to the party insiders, Raushan wanted to bring some deprived leaders of Jatiya Party by her side through awarding them lucrative posts.
