Atiqul, Tabith support deferral

They want poll rescheduling for Saraswati Puja

All mayoral and councillor candidates, nominated by ruling Awami League (AL) and the BNP, have been carrying out their respective election campaigns for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) polls in full swing for the last few days. Election to the two city corporations is scheduled to be held on January 30. Both AL and BNP mayoral candidates are making door-to-door visits to woo voters. Councillor candidates are also campaigning in their respective wards. The city wears a festive look with posters, banners, and festoons of the mayoral and councillor candidates. Supporters of the two candidates have been raising slogans from processions all day long.

AL nominated mayoral candidates for the Dhaka civic polls—Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Atiqul Islam—campaigned at different parts of the city yesterday.

While campaigning at Azimpur, New Market, and its adjacent areas in the city, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, the ruling party-nominated mayoral candidate for the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), said if elected, he will install a 24-hour hotline service for ensuring civic facilities for the residents.

“I will work for the city dwellers. I will install a 24-hour hotline service for them. They will be able to talk to me directly to resolve their problems,” he added.

He also promised to ensure all civic facilities for the city dwellers within 90 days of his oath-taking as the mayor of DSCC, if elected.

“If I get elected in the upcoming city polls, DSCC will be rebuilt in accordance with my 30-year mega plan to make Dhaka a modern city,” he added.

The mayoral hopeful said: “I was active in the government’s recent anti-corruption drive. If elected, DSCC will be a corruption-free area.”

The AL-nominated DNCC candidate Atiqul Islam yesterday requested the Election Commission (EC) to defer the date of polling for the city elections.

“Bangladesh is a non-communal country. I don’t want the city polls to be held on the day of Saraswati Puja. I will request the EC to reconsider the polling date,” he added.

While campaigning in the city’s Mirpur area, Atiqul also called upon the residents of the area to cast their votes in

favour of “nouka (boat)”, the symbol of the AL, in the upcoming Dhaka city polls for the sake of continuation of development.

In reply to BNP-nominated candidate Tabith Awal’s allegation, the AL mayoral hopeful said the BNP candidate was spreading falsehood to gain public support in favour of him.

“None of my supporters has torn his (Tabith’s) posters. I will put up his posters and banners in the city if he wants that,” he added.

BNP’s DNCC mayoral candidate Tabith Awal yesterday expressed his resentment at the EC’s decision to hold the civic polls on the day of Saraswati Puja. He said that the city dwellers would give their reply against the decision through ballots.

While carrying out electioneering, Tabith demanded that the authorities should stop the use of electronic voting machines (EVM) in the civic polls, saying the people are not ready to use it.

He started his polls campaign from Basundhara Shopping Mall at Panthapath and continued his electioneering in Green Road, Tejgaon College, Indira Road, Khamarbari, Monipuripara, Awlad Hossain Market, LGED Bhaban, Pirerbagh, Rokeya Sarani, Taltola Staff Quarter, and Panir Tanki area.

Tabith said he wanted to know about the software used in EVMs, but the EC is yet to reply to his query.

BNP’s mayoral candidate for Dhaka South Ishraque Hossain said the government is hatching a conspiracy sensing mass support for the BNP in the upcoming city elections.

He accused the government of behaving in a partisan manner, saying that the people are eagerly waiting to vote in favour of the BNP’s ‘sheaf of paddy’ symbol.

Ishraque was charged in a case by a Dhaka court only the previous day (Wednesday). He, however, pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after Shaikh Nazmul Alam, judge of the Special Judge’s Court-4 of Dhaka, read out the charges.

He alleged that the case against him was fake. The government has revived an old issue to harass him ahead of the election, he observed.
