3 killed in Cox’s Bazar, Faridpur ‘gunfights’

UNB, Cox’s Bazar, Faridpur

Three people – two of them suspected Rohingya drug peddlers – were killed in reported gunfights with law enforcement agency members in Cox’s Bazar and Faridpur yesterday. Two of the deaths were reported from Cox’s Bazar and one from Faridpur.

In Cox’s Bazar, two Rohingya drug dealers -- Abul Hasim, 30, and Mohammad Ayub, 24, of Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhiya -- were killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion members on the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive Road.

Tipped-off, RAB members raided Bahahchhara Union in Teknaf upazila on the road and the criminals, sensing their presence, opened fire prompting the law men to retaliate, said Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shah Alam, in-charge of RAB-15 CPC-2 Hoaikyang Camp.

“Hasim and Ayub suffered bullet wounds and were caught after the skirmish. They were taken to Ukhiya Health Complex where doctors pronounced them dead,” he said. Three members of RAB were also injured in the gunfight, the ASP claimed, adding that they recovered 10,000 Yaba pills, two locally-made guns and five bullets from the spot.

Alam said the bodies were sent to Cox’s Bazar hospital morgue for autopsy.

In Faridpur, a suspected leader of a robber gang was killed in a gunfight with police in Barankhola area of Boalmari upazila. Police said Enayet Hossain, 40, a resident of Bonchaki village in Chotul union of the upazila, was accused in 13 cases filed over incidents of rape, robbery and possession of drugs.

Aminur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Boalmari Police Station, said they conducted a drive in the area to foil a robbery bid. “But as soon as the team reached the area, the robbers opened fire, triggering a gunfight,” he added.

Enayet was found dead after the skirmish, said the OC, who was among six policemen, injured in the gunfight.
