Bangabandhu, PM’s distorted images

HC orders action against Jashore varsity VC, others

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The High Court (HC) has ordered the government to take action against the vice-chancellor (VC) and other responsible persons of the Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) for distortion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s images on the varsity calendar. After disposing of a rule issued by it earlier, a HC bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Qamrul Kader came up with the orders yesterday.

The HC bench asked the cabinet secretary to take action against them for distorting the images of Bangabandhu and the prime minister in accordance with the law. In response to a writ petition filed by Jashore Upazila Vice-Chairman Md Anwar Hossain for the distortion of images of Bangabandhu and PM Hasina on the varsity calendar, the HC had earlier issued a rule asking the government to explain why it should not be directed to take action against the persons responsible in this regard.

It also asked the government to form a probe body to conduct investigation into the matter. Following the HC order, a committee was formed with an additional secretary of the ministry of education as the convener. Later, the VC, registrar and public relations official of the university offered their unconditional apologies over the incident.

During the hearing on the petition, the HC bench earlier warned that, if it’s proven that the image of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was distorted on the calendar, action would be taken against those responsible. The committee found that, on the calendar, the VC’s name was placed above the name of Bangabandhu, and pictures of the prime minister and Bangabandhu were incorrectly bound and inappropriately set up.

Following the investigation report, the HC bench at last disposed of the petition and ordered action against responsible persons as per the law of the land.

Advocate MK Rahman appeared for the petitioner during the hearing on the petition.
