Woman found dead

UNB, Cumilla

 Police recovered the body of a woman from a tomato field in Nobipur village of Barura upazila on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Amena Begum, 26, daughter of Majed Mia of the village.

Satyajit Borua, officer-in-charge of Barura Police Station, said the body was recovered at 11pm. She was gagged with a towel. The body was sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for autopsy. The OC said a case will be filed in this regard.

Manik Saha observed

Journalists and other socio-cultural and political organisations in the city today observed the 16th death anniversary of eminent journalist Manik Saha with the demand for capital punishment of his killers to High Court.

 “We are not satisfied about the verdict of journalist Manik Saha murder case which Khulna Speedy Trial Tribunal announced on November 30, 2016,” speakers said yesterday in a commemoration meeting held coinciding with death anniversary of Saha, who was killed in a bomb attack on January 15, 2004 near the Khulna Press Club (KPC). The speakers also noted with sorrow that at least 25 newsmen, including Humayun Kabir Balu, were killed in the region over the past two decades but most of the masterminds and assassins still remained beyond the reach of justice. Saha was a senior reporter of vernacular Bangla Daily Sangbad. He also worked for the New Age, Ekushey TV and BBC radio.

 

Drive against illegal fishing net ends

BSS, Dhaka

The first phase of the special drive against illegal fishing net, launched on January 7 for stopping the catching of ‘jatka’ and fries of other fish species, ended on Tuesday.

During the weeklong drive, 1201 Behundi (bottom set bag net) nets, 5.68 crore meters of current net, 915 other illegal nets and 1075 fishing boats and other banned fishing equipments were seized, an official release said.
