The Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolitan (CCDM) will hold a meeting with officials of all participating clubs in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League after completion of the Bangabandhu-Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) to discuss the upcoming edition of the league.
CCDM coordinator Amin Khan said this to The Independent at the BCB-National Cricket Academy (NCA) of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur yesterday.
“We're yet to take any final decision regarding Premier League. But we have plans to hold the ‘DPL Players’ Draft’ on January 25. We also have plans to start our ‘Premier League T20’ on February 5. But everything is yet to be finalised officially,” said Amin Khan.
“It’ll be finalised when we call a meeting. After conclusion of the BPL, we'll hold a meeting with the participating DPL teams. Actually, everything will be finalised in that meeting,” he also said.
“We'll arrange that meeting after completion of the BPL,” he added.
Meanwhile, teams have started talking with the players for the upcoming edition of the Premier League. Last year, players had demanded that the board remove the ‘players-by-choice’ system from the DPL. BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon had to accept the players’ proposal in this regard.
As per the declaration, players
will be free this year. There will
be no system of players' pool, draft,
or their retention. Players can join any team they choose to play for. Along
with that, the board has no responsibility to take care of a player's payment because a player will go to play in a team of his own accord.
“It's open as there will be no draft system. It’s open for all—both players and clubs. Players can choose whatever team they choose to play for. There is no restriction. There is no system of pool, draft, and retention,” said the CCDM coordinator.
Both the organisers and sponsors are now trying to arrange the DPL Twenty20 Tournament, which would start prior to the Dhaka Premier League (50-over affair) in a more festive manner.
Walton CEO Milton Ahmed once said they planned make the T20 tournament more festive and more entertaining. Amin Khan echoed that sentiment, citing promotional reasons. “We want to make it a glamorous tournament. If it's a tournament for clubs, it'll be more glamorous and festive than BPL,” he said.
“Whenever you refer to BPL teams
like Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet, Chattogram, and Cumilla, there are always proper players, manpower, officials, and supporters. But if it's the Abahani Team, Mohammedan team, or Brothers' Unions, they have hardcore local supporters. Supporters of league teams will also come to the stadium to root for their favourite clubs. So, if the tournament is indeed held in a festive manner, it would be really glamorous,” he also said.
“If the tournament is promoted a bit, it’ll be even better. We are eager to arrange a gorgeous tournament. W plan to increase the number of day–night matches,” he added.
Citing the memories of the last edition of the DPL T20 Tournament, Khan
said they have plans to increase the number of day–night matches this time around. “Last year we arranged only two day–night matches— the semi-final and final. But this year, we hope to hold day–night matches. We will do our best to make arrange them in a festive mood,” he added.
