Reigning champions Palestine on a mission to retain title blanked the host Bangladesh by 2-0 to make a winning start in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup Football Tournament yesterday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital.

Khaled Salem led Palestine in the first half and Layth Kharoub scored the second in the second half to virtually assure their semifinal berth.

Bangladesh, who were far behind of Palestine in all respects, technique, tactics and even in physiques,  despite fabricated attacks very often throughout the match could not find the mark for once going closer three to four times.

However, right inside 10 minutes of kick-off Bangladesh were on very positive approach and also earned a corner following having a free kick just a hand-shake distance from the corner of D-box creating good pressure.

Bangladesh, who created a good number of scoring opportunities inside 25 minutes with tricky three attempts with two Raihan Hassan long throw-in and a free kick from Mamuul unlocked Palestine’s defense well.

But none of their attempts was translated into goal when the first shot of the game target was taken by Saad Uddin and his long range long range effort went over the bar on 23rd minute.

Bangladesh missed a certain goal on 22nd minute. It was unfortunate for home team for not having a goal and this time also the chance was originated from the long throw-in and this time ball went to Tapu Barman, who rushed well inside the area, but could not keep his header being very closer to the side post, as his header hit the side net.

The defending champions Palestine, who looked technically and tactically very tough, played with hasty counter attacks strategy and just showed that they were too good to Bangladesh defenders dealing with the pressure.

Palestine opened the net on just a minute before the half an hour mark of the game and it was also a strong counter attack after surviving from a danger. Palestine moved down the left and Khaled Salem went into open space when none of Bangladesh defenders mark his advance, as he received the ball without any trouble and comfortably beat goalkeeper Ashraful SIlam Rana (1-0).

Palestine doubled their advantage on 58th minute, the FFIA ranking 106 cleared it to their inferior opponents, with  playing some beautiful passing football and very sharp in attacks and also solid defense.

It was another counter attacks from Palestine and Bangladesh defenders again failed to cope with the technique when Khaled sent a cross from right side and Layth Kharoub just did not give any chance to Tapu to disturb him when he marked the target closely with a right footer on 59th minute (2-0).

Now Bangladesh will have to win their next match against Sri Lanka.
