For advancing Bangladesh’s economy, there is no alternative to reducing the country’s import dependency and increase its export volume. Recently while visiting United Arab Emirates (UAE), Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina rightly urged the Bangladeshi envoys to work for expanding export to import-dependent Middle East countries alongside attracting investment to Bangladesh. This is indeed a good direction from the premier. But it is not easy to get markets in Middle East countries where people have money and are habituated to luxurious lives. They seek quality products to match their life and style. Naturally, the posh international brands of products have a great demand there.
Excepting garments, Bangladeshi goods are not very popular in countries of the West and many rich countries in the east including Japan because of quality. But if Bangladesh can improve the quality of its products, it can certainly hope to get the markets of rich countries including the Gulf ones.
While enhancing quality and creating brands should be the avowed aim of Bangladesh’s business policy makers, Bangladesh produces fruits and vegetables in seasons that can be exported to gulf countries. This is an area Bangladesh can explore the markets there right now. For longer term, Bangladesh will have to expand its export base. Currently the country is exporting fertilizer, raw jute, frozen fish, textile fabrics, leather, sacks and bags, betel nut, knitwear, home textile, woven garment, battery, machinery, pharmaceuticals, melamine, ceramic tableware, etc.
Besides expanding the number of items, Bangladesh can pursue relentlessly to remove existing barriers through engaging more fruitful relations with the Gulf countries. The embassies of Bangladesh to Gulf countries very positively try to remove the barriers.
But Gulf countries are places where Bangladesh sends the major part of its expatriate workers and the country receives the largest share of remittance from these countries. The prime minister has rightly asked the diplomats to work in a way so that Bangladeshi workers do not fall in trouble in foreign lands. She also quite pertinently emphasized there on the need of carrying out campaign in Bangladesh villages so that overseas jobseekers do not fall victims to deception of middlemen and no one has to give additional money for going abroad. The Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment would do great job if it can put in place a mechanism that would prevent cheating of overseas jobseekers by the agencies and middlemen.
