STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Telcos must obey laws: Jabbar

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar yesterday categorically said that all companies in Bangladesh especially in the telecom sector would have to do their businesses following the existing laws, rules and regulations of the country.

“I want to categorically say that those who would like to do business in Bangladesh, especially in the telecom sector, would have to do their business following the existing laws, rules and regulations of the country…..those companies will have to show respect to the existing laws, rules and regulations,” he added.

Jabbar made the remark at a press conference at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC), a day before the three-day-long Digital Bangladesh Fair-2020 begins in the capital today.

Citing the example of the country’s second-largest private mobile operator Robi, who paid BTRC the first installment of Tk 27.60 crore on Tuesday, Jabbar said.

“We have succeeded despite critics who thought we would fail to collect the dues,” Jabbar said adding that he hoped other operators will also follow suit.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has already issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for Robi, which will be effective till February 28, BTRC Chairman Jahurul Haque said at the press conference.

“But if they fail to pay the second installment by this time, their NOC will be suspended,” he added.

A three-day Digital Bangladesh Mela begins today aiming to demonstrate the influence of 5G Technology in the highway of information communication and the overall progress of digital Bangladesh campaign.

Prime Minister’s Information and Communication Technology Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy would inaugurate the event in capital’s Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) with the theme “Highways of Technology in Bangabandhu’s Sonar Bangla”.

Posts and Telecommunications Division is organising this event where both government and private entities in digital technology sector would take part, said Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar.

The Minister said chaired by him, Parliamentary Standing Committee Chairman on the Ministry AKM Rahmatullah and Post and Telecommunications Division Secretary Nur-Ur-Rahman will remain present at the function as special guests.

Jabbar said one of the main goals of Digital Bangladesh Mela is to highlight the advancement and innovation of digital technology, ensure suitable human resources, building a bridge between mass people and advanced digital technology as well as showcase progress of “digital Bangladesh” campaign.

Post and Telecommunications Division Secretary Md. Nur-Ur-Rahman and Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Jahurul Haque were present at the press conference.

Jabbar said a total of 82 firms including ISPS, Broadband internet, triple play technology (land phone, internet and cable TV connection in single cable), mobile apps, parental control and other technologies would be showcased in the Mela.

Jabbar said the Mela will be held at the ‘Mujib Year’ as the government wants to turn this event as one of the best fairs in the world considering technological advancement.
