Enamul, Rupon put on 4-day remand

A Dhaka court yesterday placed ‘casino operator siblings’ Gandaria thana Awami League Vice-President Enamul Haque and his brother Rupon Bhuiyan on a four-day remand each in two money-laundering cases. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury passed the order after the investigation officers of the cases produced them seeking a 10-day remand for each. The court also placed one of their associates, Sheikh Sani Mostafa, on a three-day remand in a money-laundering case filed with Gandaria Police Station. On Monday, the two siblings were arrested from a house in Subhadda area of Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital along with 12 mobile phone sets and Tk 40 lakh. They remained absconding since law enforcers raided their house at Gandaria in September last and seized 8kg of gold and Tk 5.5 crore in cash, said Imtiaz Ahmed, Deputy Inspector General (Organised Crime) of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), on Monday. Four money-laundering cases were filed against them, he said. The two siblings were accused of operating casinos at the Wanderers Club for a long time. They also made money by setting up gambling boards in different places. The locals had known them as gamblers who were engaged in the gambling business of “one-ten”, according to sources. At one stage, they started a casino by entering into a contract with the Wanderers Club. Local AL leaders also alleged that the two brothers acquired the important posts in the Gandaria and Sutrapur thana AL unit by paying huge sums of money to a leader of Dhaka Metropolitan South AL, which paved way for them to make more money from the casino business.

Investigation showed that the siblings have 22 houses, mostly in old part of the city, 91 bank accounts where they have Tk 19 crore and five cars, according to CID officials.
