UNREAD POST PILES UP AT DEFUNCT PALESTINIAN PARLIAMENT

Smashed doors, dusty tables and 12 years of unread mail—welcome to the defunct Palestinian parliament. It has been more than a decade since the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) last met, due to infighting between Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas’s Fatah and Islamists Hamas. The two sides are currently talking up the prospect of new elections—the first since 2006 -- but for now the key Palestinian political institution, located in the occupied West Bank, lies empty.

 

GERMAN POLICE RAID CHECHEN ‘ISLAMISTS’ OVER ATTACK PLOT

German police carried out raids on suspected Islamist militants across the country early yesterday over allegations they were plotting a violent attack, Berlin officials said. German authorities are on high alert for Islamist threats to Europe’s most populous country, which has in recent years suffered several attacks.

 

5,000 CAMELS CULLED IN DROUGHT-HIT AUSTRALIA

Helicopter-borne marksmen killed more than 5,000 camels in a five-day cull of feral herds that were threatening indigenous communities in drought-stricken areas of southern Australia, officials said yesterday. Aboriginal leaders in South Australia state said extremely large herds of the non-native camels had been driven towards rural communities by drought and extreme heat, threatening scarce food and drinking water, damaging infrastructure, and creating a dangerous hazard for drivers.

 

CANADA YET TO DECIDE IF IT WILL PAY HARRY, MEGHAN SECURITY COSTS
AFP, Montreal
The Canadian government has yet to decide whether it will assume the security costs associated with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to split their time between Canada and Britain, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday. “I think that is part of the reflection that... needs to be had, and there are discussions going on,” Trudeau said in an interview.
