Students, teachers and local people yesterday continued to protest the murder of a schoolgirl and demand speedy trial of the killer as they formed a human chain at Mashkanda on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.
People in their hundreds from the neighborhood also joined the programme.
Earlier, they brought a protest rally demanding capital punishment of the perpetrator through speedy trial.
They also blocked a portion of the highway for an hour, disrupting vehicular traffic, police said.
Nazira Akhtar, 10, daughter of van-puller Yunus Ali and a student of class-III at Mymensingh Zila Parishad High School was brutally killed by her cousin Shahjahan Habib Munna, 22, a private car driver, on Thursday.
Earlier, protesting the killing, the school authorities took a two-day agitation programme on Saturday that includes strike, wearing of black badge and formation of human chain, said sources.
No classes and examination were held during the strike that concluded yesterday.
Meanwhile, detectives on Thursday night arrested the killer of the girl hours after she was found dead with the throat slit in Mymensingh town.
The accused Munna, son of Saiful Islam of Trishal upazila, was a private car driver of Anwarul Abedin Tuhin, a lawmaker from Nandail Mymensingh-9) constituency, police said.
The arrestee was produced before a Mymensingh court Saturday noon.
After recording Munna’s confessional statement under section 164, the
court sent him to jail, said Imarat Hossain Gazi, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch (DB) of Police, Mymensingh.
Munna admitted to police that he killed her cousin Nazira in the car he used to drive and later dumped the body in a paddy field at Bade Kolpa in the town after she repeatedly refused his proposal.
Police have also seized the car. Victim’s father filed a case with Kotwali Police Station Friday implicating Munna in the murder.
