Hundreds of marginal farmers in Bhola, especially in the shoals, have been benefiting from cultivation of red amaranth, a short duration crop, this season.
Sources said red amaranth, a leafy vegetable locally known as lalshakh, is cultivated at low cost all year round on high lands.
In Belumia and Ilisha unions of Bhola sadar upazila, farmers are busy harvesting red amaranth.
Ala Uddin of Ilisha union said he cultivated red amaranth on two bighas of land this season and sold them to a wholesaler at Tk 25,000.
Nur Islam, another farmer, said he invested Tk 1,500 to cultivate red amaranth on a bigha of land and got profit of about Tk 10,000 from sale this season.
Awalad Bepari, another grower, said it takes 20 to 30 days for harvesting this crop and then mustered can be cultivated on the same land within a short time.
Riazuddin, Bhola sadar upazila agriculture officer, said farmers are interested in cultivating this type of short-duration crop for financial benefit.
