Students of Gonoman Purura Government Primary School in Hossainpur upazila attend classes under the open sky as the faulty school building has turned risky for use. The school building was abandoned one year ago because of its bad condition and to avoid accident.  Currently, students of class I to V are receiving their lessons under the open sky as they are preparing for primary terminal examinations. Classes are taken outdoors only when there is no rain and storm. There is no alternative but to hold the classes inside the risky building as blackboards and other classroom materials are need to teach the students, said teachers of the school. Established in 1983, the tin-shed school has now four teachers for 230 students. A new building was constructed for the school in 1996, but several cracks have already developed in the roof of the four-room building due to its faulty construction. Local LGED engineer and upazila education officer, who visited the school recently, announced the building as abandoned last year. Condition of the building is not good as plaster often fall off at places and the exposed rods have gathered rust, said a few teachers and guardians.
Habiba Akter, a class-V student of the school, said they remain in panic while attending classes on the school ground under open sky as they are often battered by rains and storms. There were incidences of plasters falling on students and causing injuries to them.
 “If the authorities concerned do not take immediate steps to reconstruct the school building we will have to shift our children elsewhere,” said Abdus Sattar, father of a class-V student Poresh.
“For the sake of safety of the students and teachers, we have arranged lessons for students up to class V under the open sky amid risk of rains and storms. I have informed the chairman of school managing committee and the upazila education officer about the matter,” said M A Jalil, assistant teacher of the school.
When contacted, Upazila Education Officer Md Asaduzzaman said: “Engineers of local LGED office recently declared the building of the school abandoned and a priority proposal letter has been sent to the higher authorities concerned. We hope the building construction work will start soon.”
