A former administrator of Rajshahi University's (RU's) central library has been accused of corruption. It has been found that he bought two pens for Tk 11,000 and did not mention elaborately explained the matter in cost vouchers.

It has been also alleged that the former administrator, Prof Safiqunnabi Samadi, misused a lot of money for decoration of his personal office instead of the library. This discovery has raised questions over the whole process of digitisation of the library.

RU authorities have formed a probe body to investigate the matter. It has been alleged that the former administrator had decorated his personal chamber at room no. 221 at the Shahidullah Arts Faculty building at the cost of Tk 12 lakh.

Sources said almost Tk 3.30 crore had been allotted for automation and digitisation of the library under the Higher Education Quality Education Assurance Project (HEQEPO) in June 2014. A tender notice was issued for online book data entry at the tune of Tk 45 lakh under the integrated library system (ILS).

According the procurement, the authorities asked the vendor concerned to upload books on their websites. But only 30 per cent of the work could be completed as Prof Safiqunnabi Samadi did not pay them properly.

He decorated his room by buying a laptop costing Tk 1.45 lakh and further spent Tk 22,000 for obtaining the Microsoft licence. He spent Tk 12 lakh to send four people to visit Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia for some sort of training. He also spent Tk 20 lakh for the RFID tag, which was not properly done. Only two pens were bought for Tk 5,000 and Tk 6,000, respectively. Owing to different allegations levelled at him, Prof Safiqunnabi Samadi was removed from his post on June 14, 2017, and Prof  

Suvash Chandra Shil was elected at his  place.

However, it could not possible to reach alleged former library administratior Prof Dr Safiqunnabi Samadi for his comment as he did not receive his phone.

RU vice-chancellor Prof M Abudus Sobhan said, “The project was not allotted during my tenure. But we got a few irregularities on part of former library administrator Prof Safiqunnabi Sadami. We are investigating the issues and will take action after getting the report from the probe body."
