Teachers and students of Dhaka University (DU) yesterday demanded speedy trial and capital punishment for the person who had raped and tortured a student of the university at Kurmitola on Sunday night. Members of Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) formed a human chain at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla on the campus around 11am protesting against the incident.
Addressing the demonstrators, DUTA president Prof ASM Maksud Kamal said they wanted speedy trial and exemplary punishment for the rapist so that no one would dare to commit such a crime in future. DU students of the 2016-17 academic session staged a demonstration in front of Raju Sculpture on the campus around noon. They also demanded speedy trial in the rape case and exemplary punishment for the accused. Also yesterday, DU vice-chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman visited the victim at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Later, he told reporters: “The girl is in a better condition than earlier. She is slowly recovering from trauma. She is mentally strong and healthy.” The VC further said: “We want this maleficent to be punished quickly. We will demand that if there is a gap in the legal framework of the government, it should be removed. This type of incidents should not happen again. This should be the last event. No other girl should be raped.”
Meanwhile, a rally was held yesterday afternoon at the foot of the Raju sculpture, organised by the students of five student halls of DU, in connection with the rape of a DU student. The rally demanded eight points in favour of women violence. Speaking at the rally, the university's Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Prof Sadeka Halim, Prof Kabri Gayen, Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Marzia Rahman, Kajali Sheherin Islam teachers of the same department, Sociology Professor Samina Lutfa and many others spoke their solidarity with the protesting students. Tanjima Soma, VP of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall, presented the eight point demands for the women rally. The claims include-
1) Setting up a speedy trial tribunal for the trial of rape and sexual harassment in the country.
2) Women oppression cells should be made in all the courts of the country, rape case should be tried within a maximum period of 1 years.
3) Lamppost and CC cameras should be provided from TSC to Sufia Kamal Hall, Ganatantra Taron to Social Welfare Institute.
4) Female counsellors from all over the university will have to hire 4-5 female advisor teacher to discuss with their own female issues.
5) The university will have to bear the cost of legal aids for the female students.
6) The vandals, addicts and lunatics should be removed from the campus.
7) Security of bus stops of campus should be re-evaluated and female students' views should be given priority.
8) Non-resident students should be allowed to stay in the hall in time of emergency.
Students from all the halls of the girls against the rape lit up the candles after the women rally, protesting marches were taken out on campus.
