No rule of law in country, alleges BNP

BNP senior leader Abdullah Al Noman yesterday alleged that there is no rule of law in the country as the government is running the country unconstitutionally, reports UNB. “The rule of law can be ensured by running the country as per the country’s constitution, but it’s not happening here. The government is not following the constitution and democratic principles,” he said. Noman, a BNP vice chairman, came up with the remarks while speaking at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by ex-JCD leaders of Dhamrai thana of Dhaka demanding the release of BNP leaders, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy. He alleged that the government has created an unprecedented history by filling thousands of ‘false’ cases against BNP leaders and activists. “Even during the rule of Pakistani occupation forces, they had some respects for political leaders. But, this government has little respect for politicians. They’re arresting our leaders and implicating them in false cases.” Describing the government as authoritarian one, the BNP leader said it is now trying to destroy BNP by killing their grassroots leaders alongside arresting the senior ones. He urged the government to respond to their party chief Khaleda Zia’s call for national unity and dialogue to restore stability and democracy in the country.
Referring to the terrorist attacks in France and Lebanon, Noman said a national unity is now a must to fight together terrorism and extremism, and protect the country and its people. Earlier, BNP aired an apprehension that an inhuman disaster may hit the country’s jails as the government continues the ‘wholesale arrest’ of opposition leaders and activists. “Prisoners are being kept in jails across the country beyond their capacities. We fear that an inhuman disaster is imminent in prisons because of the regular arrest of our leaders and activists across the country,” said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon. Speaking at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he also alleged that law enforcers arrested over 500 of their leaders and activists from Rangpur, Chuadanga, Satkhira, Chittagong, Narsingdi, Gazipur, Chapainawabganj, Jhenidah and Noakhali on Saturday like any other day.
