BNP executive committee member MM Shahriar Rumy yesterday resigned from all posts of the party. “I have tendered my resignation letters to party chairperson Khaleda Zia, acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and party spokesperson Dr Asaduzzmana Ripon today (Sunday),” he said. He said he tendered his resignation due to the call of his conscience, as he is a freedom fighter, adding that he is going to join the mainstream Liberation forces. Shahriar Rumy, who is also the senior vice-president of the Faridpur district unit of BNP, resigned from his post 17 days after the retirement of party vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury from politics. Meanwhile, the desertion of BNP leaders, both at the central and grassroots levels, have left the party rank and file worrying about the party’s future. It is threatening the unity among party activists, as they are already frustrated due to the failure of the previous movements and intra-party feud, said party sources.
Some party leaders feel that the party's future is bleak because of continued departure of party leaders due to the absence of leadership. Some of them, however, said desertion of some party leaders would not cause any harm to the party.
A senior leader said Rumy’s resignation would not affect the party since there are 265 members in the executive committee. “Rumy was a ruling party activist and now he has gone back to his own party. What can we do?” he said. The leader, however, added that the party leadership may resolve his case, if he resigned over the dispute among local party leaders. Rumy said he is still undecided over joining any other party. “Let me think for sometime before taking a final decision in this regard,” he added.
