Mayoral aspirants in all the three municipalities in the district are now busy running after the party high-ups instead of people after an amendment to the electoral law that endorses municipal polls in party line.
The new amendment will allow the political parties to field candidates with their party symbols.
In Narail municipality, most of the mayoral candidates like Advocate Sohrab Hossain Biswas, Anjumam Ara, Kazi Ismail Hossain Liton, Jahangir Biswas, and Alamgir Sardar are expecting to get tickets from ruling Awami League. They think a party ticket would help them win the coveted post in election.
Sohrab Hossain Biswas was elected four times as chairman of Narail Pourashava and now turned to Narail municipality. He had been a popular public representative, but his popularity is clearly at low ebb now. He is not in the good book of district committee and central committee as well. He has little possibility of getting party ticket; and sensing this he is taking preparation to run independently without seeking party ticket. Mrs. Anjuman Ara, an undisputed leader of primary school teachers throughout the district, is a progressive, outspoken and relentless Awami League activist. She is also hopeful of getting party ticket as she is the first female mayoral candidate and has a comparatively clear image. But many think she might be victim of grouping in local Awami League politics. Considering all these she is going door to door of the voters and at the same time lobbying with the party high ups.
Awami League leader Kazi Ismail Hossain Liton is also a mayor aspirant. He prefers convincing the party high-ups to making contact with the common voters at the moment. He said in present circumstances getting ‘boat’ symbol will play a vital role in winning the election.
Jatiya Shramik League leader Jahangir Hossain Biswas is a mayoral aspirant for the second time. In the last election, he was defeated by about three thousand votes. Though Awami district committee has a blessing on him, he is not sure of having party ticket for some unavoidable reasons. Jubo League leader Alamgir Sardar, another mayoral aspirant, is hopeful of getting ticket of ruling party. He recently made his intention public through a showdown with supporters on dozens of motorbikes in the town.
District Awami League president and district council administrator Advocate Subas Chandra Bose said he has not received any instruction from the high command on nominating party candidate.
On the other hand, Bangladesh Nationalist party BNP succeeded in selecting lone candidate for mayoral post and he is Julfikar Ali, joint secretary of district BNP. In the last municipality election of Narail municipality, he won the mayoral post, but he was suspended by Local Government Department after he was implicated in a criminal case of torching bus during the last anti government movement of 20-prty alliance. Prior to this, he was imprisoned for more than six months in the case. Many people still believe that Julfikar stands a fair change if the election is held freely.
