‘Whiny Women’ at Dhaka Gallery

DL REPORTER, Dhaka
‘Whiny Women’
at Dhaka Gallery

A two-day mixed media exhibition titled ‘Whiny Women’ is showcasing various types of artworks by 16 women artists at the Dhaka Gallery in Banani of the capital.

Former state minister and actress Tarana Halim inaugurated the exhibition as chief guest on the gallery premises yesterday. Around 50 artworks consist of painting, sculpture, rickshaw paint and others by the 16 participating artists, across the spectrum of genders, at the exhibition.

Women in Arts, Bangladesh (WIAB) has organised the exhibition aiming to highlight the immense diversity of female lived experience by exploring the complexity, contexts, and critiques of representations of the South Asian female form.

Remaining open to all from 3pm to 8pm, the exhibition is set to conclude today.

Spearheaded by founder of WIAB and filmmaker Pracheta Ahana, the exhibit has been supported logistically and conceptually by co-founders, Alveera Rahman, artist Zarin Subha Rodela, and student-writer Sagorika Haque.

WIAB took root as a space of necessity–recognising a lack of local gender-sensitive creative platforms, the organisation began as a Facebook group for those identifying as female to showcase their journey across the art industries within the country. Over the course of a month, it has already grown into a 500+ strong support network for hobbyists, professionals, and semi¬professionals from varying fields and all walks of socioeconomic life, each with their own unique stories to share, in a space curated to encourage free expressions of womanhood.

WIAB founder Pracheta said about their endeavour, “I started this to collectively fight our society’s deep-rooted systems of oppression that are bent on erasing and demeaning the difficulties of living as a woman personally, professionally, and politically.”

“To have the privilege of an unsilenced voice comes with responsibility. We must all draw strength from and for each other, no matter what we identify as. The world is changing and so must we”,  Pracheta added.

Zarin Subha Rodela, one of WIAB co-founders, said about organising the exhibition, “We created a Facebook group to make a platform for the female artists from all the mediums of art, like painting and photography to sculpture, in investigating the nuances of representation within the home, workplace and pop culture. Through our paintings, we want to highlight women’s issues, which a woman faced in her daily life. In future, we will arrange this kind of exhibition in a wide range.”
