Book the brick-kilns for not following rules

It is worrying that brick-kiln owners are defying ban and are using timbers to burn bricks. At Jhenidah’s Harinakundu upazila this activity is going on by setting up sawmills near kilns but the local administration is not taking steps to stop it. To protect the country’s environment—burning woods not only releases carbon dioxide in air, burners of brick kilns devour our precious greeneries also—very positively the ban on burning woods has been put in place. But if the ban is not implemented in reality, the unscrupulous owners will continue to endanger our environment.

There is no dearth of complaints against the brick kilns. These environmentally hazardous kilns are often established near the human habitats destroying the agricultural fields. While we need bricks for urbanization, but bricks producing kilns must not be allowed to wreak havoc on public health, environment and agriculture: they have to be set up in right places following the relevant rules framed to avert dangers coming from them. A few days ago, the High Court ordered to stop operation of all brick kilns near Dhaka to raise the quality Dhaka’s air.

There is a rampant allegation that brick kilns do not often have required environment-friendly long chimneys with the height of 120 feet to 130 feet. While huge quantities of timbers and immature bamboo stumps are burnt for brick kilns, there are reported examples that the owners of kilns kept coal outside the kilns to show up that they were abiding by the rules but in actuality they were burning woods and bamboos inside.

People in Bangladesh live in the most-densely areas of the world. Our land resources are limited and it is imperative that we have to avert further degradation of our environment on the one hand and take steps to restore ecological balance that we have already lost. That the effect of illegal brick kilns is massive both in terms of environment, health and agriculture can hardly be overemphasised. The administrations as well as the Directorate of Environment should perform their duty and bring to book the illegal brick kiln owners and ensure that bricks are being burnt following the stipulated rules. This duty cannot be neglected.
