Al Nahian Khan Joy and Lekhak Bhattacharya have been made the new president and general secretary respectively of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student affiliate body of the ruling Awami League (AL). Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also the organisational chief of BCL, announced the names at the 72nd founding anniversary of the party at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital yesterday. Joy and Lekhak have been serving as the acting president and general secretary of BCL since September 14, 2019 after the resignation of its former President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and General Secretary Golam Rabbani as the roles of the duo became marred in controversy.
“From now on they (Joy and Lekhak) will discharge their duties as the new president and general secretary of Chhatra League,” said Hasina, also the president of AL. Both Joy and Lekhak are students of Dhaka University.
Hailing from Barishal, Joy is completing Masters in criminology. He had served BCL as legal affairs secretary of the previous committee. He had been the general secretary of its Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall before that.
Lekhak is also a post-graduate student of the Social Welfare Department of Dhaka University. His uncle Swapan Bhattacharjee, an MP from Jashore’s Manirampur, is the State Minister for Rural Development and Cooperatives. Lekhak had served as joint general secretary of BCL’s Dhaka University unit and Jagannath Hall unit.
During the last council, BCL vested all power to Sheikh Hasina, as the president of AL to decide on the leadership, who had nominated Shovon and Rabbani as president and general secretary respectively on July 31, 2018.
Nearly one year later, BCL announced the 301-member central committee amid criticism and protest.
Earlier on September 7 last year, Sheikh Hasina, at a meeting of AL, expressed annoyance over ‘controversial’ activities of top BCL leaders.
Allegations ran rife that the new BCL committee included a few married members, non-students, extortionists, expelled BCL men, drug dealers and addicts, and former leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir, excluding some dedicated BCL leaders. Later on September 14, Shovon and Rabbani resigned from their posts.
